Brief appearance description: Tall, slender, but well-built, Evan stands around between 5”10-5”11. His wavy brown hair starts out neatly combed but is usually in a tousled mess near the end of the day when he’s working. Hence, his wife will sometimes been seen tackling his messy hair, tangles and all. Regardless, his brown hair frames his strong, broad face rather nicely, accompanied by a slightly square jaw, blunt chin, long, thin mouth with a flatter upper lip, and most importantly, his almond-shaped light grey eyes. His eyes are warm and congenial, often seen with humor and trust. His wife can always tell what Evan is thinking just by looking into his grey eyes.
Evan’s normal attire consists of worn-out, baggy blue jeans, a simple, plain burgundy shirt, and black shows. He wears a white lab coat to remind himself and others of his medical profession and to help bolster his confidence of being a real doctor, despite the fact he never got the chance to recite the oath. When he is not wearing his lab coat, Evan will occasionally don a rough, tan jacket. On his left hand and ring finger is his gold wedding ring that he never takes off—save for if he’s showering or going to bed.
Inside their head.
Personality: Evan is a down-to-earth, rather cheery fellow who likes to joke around to lighten up the mood, much to the inner amusement of his wife, Lisa. He always tries to approach events or think in a positive manner, especially during these trouble times. Evan doesn’t let anything damper his jovial attitude but that doesn’t mean he can’t be serious. On the contrary, when it comes to his job and helping others, Evan becomes eerily calm, staid, and extremely focused on the task at hand, refusing to take a break or give up until he finishes his goal all the way through. This stubbornness of his sometimes turns into pigheadedness and often affects him greatly when he refuses to give up on a dying patient and continues to treat them even to the bitter end. This type of failure always hurts him, for he feel likes if he had learned more in medical school, he could have saved one more life.
Evan is very empathic, compassionate person. Being a doctor and connecting with people has made him very determined to heal humanity and assist others who are in more need than he. Unlike his wife Lisa, Evan doesn’t have any trust issues and fathoms that trust and compassion is needed to help mankind survive and help his country heal from the aftermath of the virus. He truly wants Haven to flourish and grow into a society so all of them can rebuild a community. To the Haven members, he is the prime example of a gentle, loving father figure who will do anything in his power to protect and defend them all with every inch of his life.
There is one thing Evan possesses that makes him a child at heart: when he’s playing with his dinosaur toys. Some of them are when he had as a young boy and others he had found among the wreckage and decided to “adopt” them. He keeps them in a special chest and likes to play with them when no one’s looking (or at least, when Lisa is only person around). The dinosaur toys are the last entity that reminds him of home, his family, and former life; they are the only semblance he sees as “normal”, which he feels Haven needs this every now and then to prevent everyone from losing it. Furthermore, the toys also fuel his fond wish to have a baby someday; whenever that time comes, he is ready to become a father. He believes bringing new life into this broken world is exactly what they need: hope and joy.

History: Evan Dominick VonDreele was born in a small suburb in Illinois, the youngest child of a family of three and the only boy. He lived a middle-class, comfortable house with working father and a mother who worked part-time so she could spend more time at home and with her children. Evan’s father worked at a multi-dollar company, pulling the six figures while Evan’s mother, who was a bright individual herself, worked at a local gardening shop run by her and several of her friends. Evan and his two sisters always had fond memories of helping their mother at her store or watching her bake another batch of delicious cookies, brownies, or candies. Every meal Evan ever had was home-cooked and his father never failed to compliment and appreciate the homemade dinners he received when he came home. Evan’s childhood was one of innocence and happiness, a normal life that most children his age experienced. His parents taught him the importance of hard-work, individuality, and diligence but from his mother, he received her never-ending compassion while from his father, Evan inherited his unyielding determination to succeed and willpower.
Unfortunately, when Evan was 11, tragedy struck the VonDreele household. Elisabeth, the middle child of the VonDreele family, was diagnosed with cancer and the doctors find a tumor in her brain and it was still constantly growing. For many a month Evan watched his sister going back and forth between the hospital and home, looking more ill, skinner, and paler with each passing day. His parents spends thousands upon thousands of dollars trying to find cures for Elisabeth, some more plausible than others. And just when things look hopeful for Evan’s sister, all of a sudden Elisabeth would relapse again and the same nerve-wrecking, painful cycle would begin all over again. Evan did his utmost best to be there for his sister but in the end, everything his parents tried wasn’t enough. When he was 13, Elisabeth, who was only 16 years-old, died and was buried soon after. The entire family took her passing hard but Evan’s mother took it the hardest. For weeks she was consumed in her grief, crying over Elisabeth and the life her daughter would never have. Evan was afraid he would lose his mother too. Finally, his father decided it would be best for all of them to see a therapist. Evan felt like he didn’t need one but realized his father wanted everyone to do it for his mother’s sake; Mr. VonDreele didn’t want her going through this experience alone. Eventually, the therapy sessions helped his mother but she never fully recovered from Elisabeth’s tragic death. However, after his sister’s death and therapy, Evan realized how much he wanted to help people and was fascinated with medicine hence he decided to become a doctor and save as many lives as possible. And so, at age 14, Evan began preparing himself to become a doctor.
At high school, Evan studied hard and stressed over in getting top grades, knowing he had to go to a remarkable college in order for him to ever be considered to be taken into a prestigious medical school. Although his parents supported his decision, they still wanted him to have fun and told him not let grades and school control his entire life. Eventually, Evan found out how to balance both school and life and the burden of those weeks of stress were lifted from his shoulders. Finally, Evan could relax and enjoy being a teenager. Even though his high school was known for wild, crazy parties, Evan stayed away from them, not wanting to jeopardize his future as a doctor. His life during high school was normal and he earned his diploma and graduated in the top 20 percent of his class. He was accepted into University of Chicago and spent those four years preparing himself for medical school.
After college, Evan immediately enrolled into medical school and was 23 at the time. However, during his second year in medical school, at age 24, the Mange Virus was unleashed and within days, everything and everyone Evan knew or loved was destroyed or changed utterly. His parents and older sister Annie became Infected and Evan only found this out after escaping his medical school, which was overrun with Infected-turned individuals. He called his parents and then Annie but received no answer. He went back home first and nearly died after a run-in with one of his parents, who had become one of the Infected. He then went to his sister’s apartment but soon discovered by the evidence left behind that she became an Infected too. So, in less than a day, Evan VonDreele was left alone in a world that quickly crumbling apart into a living hell.
In the beginning years of the post-virus era, Evan searched for survivors while dodging and evading any sightings of the Infected. Eventually, he stumbled upon a place called “Haven” and longing for food, fresh water, and company, he entered, not carrying who or what would be inside. In the Haven, he met Wally MacEyre and few others, including his future wife, Lisa. At first, the people of Haven were uneasy in accepting another stranger because the last person was a late-bloomer and turned into an Infected and Wally had to shoot him numerous times before the creature died. While trying to assure them he was an Immune, just like them, his background in medical training came up. Since Haven did not have a residential doctor, Wally decided it would wise and smart for them to keep Evan around. Thanks to his heart-warming, friendly nature, he soon wormed his way into the hearts of everyone at Haven, even gruff Wally and distant Lisa, who was suspicious of him at first.
Thus began the story of him and Lisa. Before arriving to Haven, Lisa, had lost her entire family when the virus broke out and was later betrayed by others so they could save their own skin. Thus, she soon had trouble trusting other people, especially strangers. However, whether it was his personality in general or his newfound power many called “Empathy”, Evan was able to slowly understand Lisa’s emotions, making it easier to communicate with her and help her to overcome her trusting issues—this took some time though. After this, they became good, tight friends, which he spent much of their time together sewing and stitching Lisa and everyone else back together. Then one day, Wally burst into Haven with a severely wounded Lisa in his arms, blood gushing out everywhere. Frantic, Evan began tending Lisa immediately, doing his utmost best to remain calm even though he had never dealt with an wound as serious as Lisa’s. But despite the odds stacked up against him, Evan persevered and refused to give up. He cleaned and sterilized her wounds, transferred blood, sown, and bandaged Lisa up and watched over her until she finally woke up and was able to eat and drink. It was at that particular moment, when he was slowly helping her recover, that Evan realized he had loved Lisa all along and didn’t notice his feelings for her until now.
Once Lisa recovered, Evan was inwardly panicking, trying to think of ways to proclaim his love but no matter how many times he planned it out, the timing was never right or he kept on getting interrupted. Finally, the right opportunity came when he was doing routine check-ups on all of the Haven members to make sure everyone was healthy—for the most part. When it was Lisa’s turn, Evan waited until after he was done running tests before he told her how he felt.
“Look, Lisa, I don’t know any other way to tell you this but I’m going to say it anyway.” He paused, feeling his heart pulsing harder and harder inside his ribcage, hammering so fast in his chest he was half-afraid his blood pressure was sky-rocketing now. Inhaling and mustering up his courage, he lifted his eyes to meet Lisa’s inquisitive gaze and confessed:
“I love you.”
He was expecting rejection, he was waiting for the sympathetic, sad smile and the head pat accompanied by the “I’m sorry, Evan, but…” yet none came. Instead, Lisa cross her arms and replied, “Well, it’s about time you said that. I was thinking I had to be the one who had to take the first step.”
What happened next took Evan completely off guard. She grabbed his shirt and pulled him forward until their noses were practically touching. “Now, kiss me, fool,” she whispered, her breathing tickling his skin, his mouth suddenly dry. But Evan didn’t need to be told twice, his lips were already eclipsed over hers while his hands tenderly framed her face, his thumbs stroking her cheeks. They would have been locked in this position if the door hadn’t opened up and Wally’s voice hadn’t echoed over them:
“Evan. That better not be how you plan to do your check-up on me.”
His relationship with Lisa began on that very day, when he was only 26. There wasn’t much “dating” but they did their best to make their relationship as normal as possible. Sometimes, there were issues but Lisa and Evan managed to overcome and stop them from becoming bigger problems. Eventually, after a year or so, Evan asked Lisa to marry him, and of course, she said yes. Their wedding was small, only consisting of the Haven members and a nearby priest who was happy enough to perform a small ceremony. The simplicity of the wedding didn’t bother Evan at all—all that mattered to him was marrying Lisa and spending the rest of his life with her. Now, in the present time, they have been married for about seven years.
What do you think of this situation? It could be worse.
