Desecration's Smile has a fairly standard post-apocalyptic setting: no government, no infrastructure, no first-world conveniences. However, in the interest of clarity, here's the lowdown on how accessible/inaccessible certain resources are for Immunes and Carriers.[/a] will have to be compatible with the region's climate. Similarly, animal life is limited to the species native to the region, with the possible exception of escaped zoo animals. Some non-perishables may still be found in abandoned homes or stores, though they are increasingly rare. Supply drops can provide types of food that are otherwise unavailable, but they are inconsistent as they are dependent on donations from other countries.
- FOOD:
[li]WATER:[/li] Can be collected from wells, rivers, rain, snowmelt, or supply drops. Plumbing will no longer provide running water unless a building is attached to a well. The exception is toilets, which will still work if water is added to the bowl/tank. As the only guaranteed clean water comes from supply drops, it is one of the most valuable resources around. Any other water may have to be filtered and boiled to ensure it is potable.
[li]ENERGY:[/li] Can come from numerous sources. Some buildings were fitted with solar panels pre-Mange, which are still functioning. Others may have generators powered by solar power, biofuels, or fossil fuels (occasionally provided in supply drops). Particularly enterprising survivors may even build windmills to power their home. But without a "grid" to fall back on, buildings without these alternative sources are left in the dark--literally. Pre-Mange, electric-powered vehicles were popular, so much of a household's energy use goes toward keeping its modes of transport charged up. During particularly hot or cold weather, cooling and heating systems are also prioritized.
[li]WEAPONS:[/li] Specifically, ammunition can be extremely difficult to come by, second only to clean water in terms of rarity. Supply drops and scavenging are the primary ways to acquire ammo, and most survivors will save it for dire situations. Only well-organized survivor groups with large stockpiles will use guns as a first line of defense. Much more common are weapons like knives, hatchets, and even arrows, as these can be easily scavenged or crafted, and have a much longer effective lifetime than cartridges.
