Brief appearance description: Zackary has long, dark-brown hair, which falls well past his shoulders, ending around his shoulder blades. Depending on his mood that day, he may choose to pull it back into a ponytail, or he may choose not to. His eyes are dark blue in color, and sometimes are bloodshot, which only adds to his intimidating appearance. He’s very tan, as a result of both his heritage and his long hours spent outdoors. He has a scar on his brow, over his left eye, a souvenir from his teenage years.
His build and his substantial height (6’4”) make him very imposing and intimidating. And the muscles aren’t just for show—ten years of surviving on his own, and years of sports and hard physical labor before that built up his physique, making him strong. His hands, and the soles of his feet, are rough and calloused from all his years of work, as well.
For his everyday attire, Zackary wears a plain black short-sleeved shirt, jeans with worn-out knees, and black work boots. During the winter months, he wears a well-worn gray jacket over his shirt. He also wears a shark’s-tooth necklace around his neck.
Let's really get inside their head...
Personality: Zackary is almost always markedly irritated, often for what seems like no apparent reason. His temper is notoriously short; the simplest things can leave him frustrated and fuming, and he is prone to violent rages. He’s been described as terrifying during these tempers, especially when they are violent enough to tip him into his berserker mindset. He has very little control over these rages of his, and during them, will say whatever he wants and do whatever he pleases to release the anger (such as knocking over furniture). He doesn’t care who he hurts, either—in fact, it seems to cheer him up if blood is spilled.
When it comes to making decisions about anything, Zackary is reckless and impulsive, preferring to rush headlong into something and think about the consequences later—that is, if he even cares about the consequences at all. The times that he does stop to think about the consequences, he always makes sure to rationalize his actions, make them seem necessary and right, at least to him. In his mind, so long as he has a reason for the things he does, his actions are justified. To him, there are no obstacles—if he wants something, he will get it, and he doesn’t care who he has to cheat, lie to, steal from, or even kill to get it. It’s for this reason that he has so much trouble keeping jobs and meaningful relationships.
A wholly aloof and unattached man, Zackary does have a few things that are able to capture his attention and hold it. One of those things is food and cooking. Ever since he was a child, Zackary has been a voracious eater, far from the picky children parents dread having. Another thing that has always captured his attention was blood. Even today, when he is injured, he becomes fascinated by the blood, sometimes even tasting it. Finally, he was always fascinated by wars and battle, and spent most of his childhood either reading about wars or watching documentaries and movies about them.
Despite his shortcomings, Zackary does have a few redeeming qualities. While never a very studious, book-smart person, he’s street-smart and knows how to get things done. He also is not afraid of defying social norms and will bend his will to very, very few people, instead choosing to do what he pleases. When someone does get through to him, the rare few that do, they can expect him to be quite loyal.

Family:
Father: Andrew Garrett Merricks (Infected)
Mother: Noelani Mele Merricks (Infected)
Sibling(s): Kalea Abigail Merricks (Infected)
History: Of half-Hawaiian descent, Zackary was born in Los Lunas, New Mexico, to Andrew Merricks and his wife, Noelani. Growing up, he saw little of his mother, who was a nurse at the local hospital, and was mostly raised by his accountant father and his sister Kalea, who was six years older than he was. When he started preschool at age four, he proved to be rather troublesome, and was largely unable to play nicely with the other children. At first, his parents attributed it to him not being used to being around other children, having spent all of his time at home with his parents and sister. However, as time went on, he came to be increasingly violent with the other children, to the point that he was spending more time in the principal’s office than he was spending out of it. He had trouble making and keeping friends, and later on, when he reached puberty, he had trouble getting and keeping girlfriends.
It finally all seemed to reach a pinnacle when he was fourteen. While in gym class, a boy made a comment about his sexual orientation, stemming from his lack of girlfriends. Zackary snapped, and a fight ensued; it took four teachers to separate the two students, and while Zackary only had a cut lip, the other boy had a broken nose, a black eye, and was missing a tooth. Zackary was suspended, and the school’s counselor suggested a serious psychological evaluation. He was formally diagnosed with Antisocial Personality Disorder shortly before his fifteenth birthday.
His parents took the news hard, thinking they had spawned some sort of monster-child. Only Kalea, who had always proven herself to be calm in times of crisis, took the news gracefully, and resolved to try to help her brother. Every day, after Zackary was out of school and she was out of classes, she would work with him to try to overcome his antisocial behavior. Progress was very slow, but during this time, Zackary became very close to his sister. Shortly before he graduated high school, however, Kalea got engaged, and moved in with her new fiancé, who lived down in Las Cruces, three hours from their little hometown. Zackary went into a complete shutdown, refusing to speak to anyone—not even Kalea when she called on the phone. He thought he had been abandoned by her. He graduated high school with no plans for the future, and found himself working for a construction company, mostly for his proficiency at heavy lifting.
When he was twenty years old, the Mange Virus broke out, and although it took several months for it to reach Los Lunas, a state of panic seemed to set in early. Zackary, personally, didn’t care what happened—although he seemed to like the chaos that had taken over. Finally, after a few months, the virus spread to Los Lunas, quickly infecting the residents. Much to his surprise, Zackary was immune—although his parents were not, as he quickly discovered. Zackary learned this the hard way, when, two nights after his father caught the virus, he made the change—and headed straight for Zackary’s room. When he barged in, craving blood, Zackary didn’t panic or lose his cool. He simply grabbed a pistol and calmly shot his father point-blank, through the head. Knowing that his mother was well on her way to making the change as well, he went downstairs and put her out of her misery.
With nothing left to keep him in Los Lunas, Zackary began to travel, wandering the country. He had no real goal, only not to get killed by an Infected. The few that he crossed paths with and had to fight, he enjoyed the fight—but only for the sake of the fight. He hated the Infected themselves, mostly because, unlike the people he had fought against in his pre-Mange life, they didn’t fall very easily, and always left him needing some recovery time. After a while, California began to bore him, so he started heading east—somewhere he’d never been before. The weather became colder and more miserable the further east he went, and though he didn’t like it, he kept going. Finally, after wandering aimlessly for ages, he found himself slumming around the broken city of Chicago. He liked it well enough, so he stayed, living through foraging. To this day, he still remains in Chicago, having made himself a little hidey-hole in an abandoned apartment. His home isn’t too hard to find—it’s the only one that actually looks someone still lives there.
