Name: Kayleigh Adrienne Hawkins
Age: 29
Location: Near Chicago, Illinois
Immune or Carrier? Carrier
Status: Single
Face Claim: Summer Glau
Picture:
Brief appearance description: Kayleigh has chestnut-brown hair, which is usually somewhat wavy, messy and a bit tangled. Her hair falls to her shoulder blades, and she will either leave it down or pull it into a messy bun. Her eyes are brown-gray in color, with thick, dark lashes. Her skin has a touch of color to it, though she’s still on the pale side; her nose is small and straight, her lips are full and usually a pale pink in color.
She stands at 5’6” in her bare feet, though her shoes always make her seem taller. Kayleigh is very slender, with long legs and small hips. When she was younger, she was very flat-chested, but now, she’s rather generously endowed for a girl as thin as she is. Her daily attire consists of a spaghetti-strapped tanks tops, usually in gray or black (although her favorite is a red one), a pair of tight-fitting, paint-splattered jeans, and black boots that add another inch and a half to her height. During the colder months, she wears a black sweater over the tank top, and a zip-up jacket over that. She still has the purse that she found with her when she awoke, which is battered and worn out but still useable.
Let's really get inside their head...
Personality: Kayleigh is very rough around the edges. Years of teasing and taunting gave her a thick skin, and a take-no-shit sort of attitude. She also has a temper that’s on the short side, and when she goes off, she gets loud—and nasty. Her rages have gotten worse since she became a Carrier, since the fangs and the claws tend to come out now while she’s raging. Often, she will say things she doesn’t mean to say, and she won’t always come back to apologize later on, especially if she’s really pissed off. She’s a good person, despite what her attitude may indicate or others may say. However, she does not want to come across as childish or annoying; Kayleigh wants to make it known that she’s not to be taken lightly. She can be difficult to get along with at times, though, because she is often very stubborn and a little impatient.
She’s a very restless sort of person, who needs to keep her mind stimulated and her body busy at almost all times. When bored, she has a habit of pacing or fidgeting. Despite her serious, often intense nature, she does enjoy a good laugh and a good time every now and again.
Underneath her tough exterior, however, Kayleigh feels very lost. It bothers her that she can’t remember anything of her past life, of who she was before she became a Carrier. She despises these feelings, for she thinks that they make her seem weak and helpless, which drives her insane. Because of this, she bottles these feelings up and hides them under her hardened exterior. Thus far, no one has cracked into these true feelings, and she doesn’t intend for anyone to crack into them.
Even without her memories to aid her, she still enjoys art with great passion, and will occasionally stop on her travels to sketch particularly lovely scenery in the tiny sketchbook she has with her.

History: The youngest child of the Hawkins family, Kayleigh was born in Annapolis, Maryland, during the middle of a raging summer storm. She was a rather normal child, had her share of good and bad days, and got through elementary school with no major issues. Middle school, however, was like a den of lions. Kayleigh was rather tall for her age, and extremely skinny, which led many of the girls to pick on her, calling her “beanpole” or “stick”. As she got a bit older, the attention of the teasing shifted to her small chest. Her grades started slipping, which didn’t please her parents. As a result, she spent most of her middle school years miserable. The only bright spot was the close relationship she had with her brother Taylor. He understood what she was going through, and would often help brighten her day by spending time with her. He even taught her fist-fighting, in case she ever had to use it.
The teasing died down by the time she got to high school, and her grades picked up somewhat. She also discovered she had a bit of a prowess for art after her teacher placed one of her projects in the school’s art show and it won first place. Despite this, however, she felt that her parents didn’t appreciate her efforts. All they ever seemed to talk about was Avery’s upcoming graduation from college, or John’s excellent progress at the Naval Academy, or Taylor’s position as the high school’s running back. Kayleigh felt overshadowed by her “all-star” older siblings.
When sophomore year came around, Kayleigh decided that she had had enough of trying to please her parents. She started openly rebelling, hanging out with the “wrong crowd”, sneaking out to parties, and the like. She tried taking up smoking, but found it made her want to gag and promptly quit. Drinking, however, was more her style, and she started doing that on a semi-regular basis. Her parents tried to straighten her out by threatening to send her to military school, but she pushed back, making life in the Hawkins household very tense from the start of her sophomore year to the end of her senior year. Kayleigh’s grades had stayed high enough for her to get accepted to California College of the Arts, and as soon as graduation was done, she left, heading for California. Since school had yet to start yet, she stayed with her brother Taylor, who had also moved to California after high school.
When she was 19, the Mange virus reached California. Kayleigh contacted the airborne strain of it, and quickly fell ill. Taylor, not realizing exactly what was wrong with her, kept her at home, trying to help her feel better. On the third day after she contracted the virus, she fell unconscious. Her brother, now extremely worried, put her in the backseat of his beat-up old car, and started for the hospital. While on the highway, a man driving a large truck plowed into Taylor’s car, driving it head-first into the guard rail at 70 miles an hour. Taylor was killed instantly; Kayleigh sustained moderate injuries, but her life was spared because she was in the backseat.
She awoke still strapped in the backseat, with no memory of who she was or how she got there. All she knew was that she was in a car with a dead body in the front seat. As she got out of the car, she noticed a bag—her purse—on the floor of the car. She grabbed it, then took off, wandering the side of the highway until she found shelter in an abandoned motel. Once inside the motel, she took a look through the purse. Inside, in a black wallet with a skull on it, she found a Maryland driver’s license and a student ID for California College of the Arts, both of which named her as Kayleigh Adrienne Hawkins. She also found a cell phone with a number labeled as “Home” programmed in it. When she dialed the number, however, all she got a busy signal. She also found a few pens, some chewing gum, and a very small sketchbook filled with doodles. There were a few photographs in the wallet as well, including one of her and Taylor (who she recognized as the dead man in the car) and one of her and Avery together at her high-school graduation. On the back was scribbled “me and A., graduation”. She didn’t know who A. was, but she figured she was someone important.
After spending the night in the abandoned motel, Kayleigh began wandering, with simply surviving as the only thing on her mind. Two days after she started walking, she found herself extremely hungry, and there was no food in her purse. When a hapless rabbit came hopping across her path, she immediately attacked it. It wasn’t until after the rabbit was dead and she was building a fire that she noticed the claws; while she was eating, she discovered she had fangs. Now thoroughly confused as to what she was, she began her quest for answers about what she was. Having traveled north, she soon found herself at the California-Oregon border, and just over the border, she found a small group of Immunes. She knew she wasn’t like them—they smelled different. She found the one that seemed to be the leader, and explained what had happened to her. He had no idea what she was—he just knew that she was different. Despite that, he offered to let her stay with them.
Kayleigh lived with the pack of Immunes for nearly four years. One night, however, an Infected shambled in and shattered that life. Only Kayleigh and one other person—an Immune named Steven—made it out alive. They escaped on Steven’s motorbike (a little piece of his former life), and set off to find another safe haven. Over time, as they traveled, a spark of romance developed between the two; this spark was helped along by the large amounts of time they spent alone together. He taught her how to work the bike, and repair it, which Kayleigh found surprisingly interesting. After two years of traveling up and down the West Coast on the bike (which they charged wherever they could find a working generator, usually at abandoned houses or the occasional safe haven) they were a seriously involved couple.
But it wouldn’t last.
They left the West Coast and headed east. She suggested Annapolis, the town that was listed on her driver’s license, thinking that she might find some answers about her past there. One night, while they were stopped in Arizona, Steven left to go hunting for food. He still hadn’t returned the next morning. Kayleigh waited at their camp for a week, but in the time, Steven never returned. She searched the surrounding woods for miles, but never found him. It was as if he had simply vanished into thin air. She promised herself she would wait another week, see if he came back, and if he didn’t, she would continue on by herself.
One week turned into one month, but still, no Steven. Finally, tired of waiting for someone who she feared would never return, she decided to take the bike and leave. Before she left, she wrote a note to Steven and left it near their campsite, in case he ever did come back. She took the bike and set off, making her way north. Annapolis was no longer her goal. She just wanted to go anywhere.
Occasionally, she would live with packs of Immunes that she found along her way, and at one point, she met up with another Carrier, who managed to explain to her exactly what she was. But after a while, she would always be on the road again. Finally, after four years of this, she found herself in Illinois, with low supplies and an almost-dead battery in the bike. She heard about some havens and safe zones in Chicago, and decided to head for there.
