Brief appearance description:
He stands about 6’4” and has blue eyes and brown hair which he always keeps styled meticulously with whatever pomade he can find around the ruins of Chicago. He tends to be smiling rather than doing anything else but his smile always seems to be a bit too wide. He is always seen wearing a suit or tuxedo depending on his mood. His tuxedo is tattered in places but he always has a nice suit or two around from his days as a professor which he wears when he’s trying to indoctrinate a new lost soul or two.
Inside their head.
Personality: Due to his parent’s untimely demise and his subsequent quest to understand the psyche of all the people like those that had destroyed his life, Cain developed an overwhelming ability to absorb information relating to the way that people’s brains worked. He used this knowledge to become a prodigy in the world of psychology as well as understanding the inner workings of the brains of people around him.
He thought processes became slightly warped due to his childhood and the time he spent with Clementine. He thinks nothing of using his knowledge of the working of human minds to destroy entire groups of people and would not bat an eye to do so to please Clementine.
He likes to maintain an air of sophistication at all times just as he did wen he was a professor as well as because he inherited a large sum of money from his parents when they were murdered. However, while his suits and tweed jackets are all pristine, his one tuxedo is tattered in areas and even then he prefers to wear it when he wants to impress someone, most notably Clementine.
Likes: Clementine, Pomade, Suits, Good Sushi, Luxury Cars, Scotch On The Rocks
Dislikes: Stubborn People, Domesticated Animals, Watered Down Liquor
Strengths: Understanding people, Manipulating emotions, Appearing harmless
Weaknesses: Physically weak, Overly Dependent on Clementine,
Fears: Not Understanding People, Being Alone For Too Long, Rejection
Family: Andy Sterling (father/deceased) Penny Sterling (mother/deceased)
History: Dr. Sterling had been born with the proverbial silver spoon in his mouth. His parents were both wealthy and successful in their fields. His mother was a high powered stockbroker in the hustle and bustle of downtown Chicago and his father owned the “Hottest Vietnamese Fusion Restaurant This Side of Lake Michigan” according to the newspapers. Yes, if not for the events of his fourteenth birthday he would have had the most idyllic of lives.
However, on his fourteenth birthday as he sat there with a cone strapped to his head ready to start highschool the next year, two armed men broke into his family’s home in the suburbs. They moved mechanically as if driven by some higher power and within what seemed like seconds they had raped and murdered his mother as Cain and his father were tied up and forced to watch. Then the anonymous assailants turned their attention to Cain’s father and they had just enough time to torture him to death before the police arrived having been alerted by a neighbor who had heard some “strange sounds” emanating from inside the Sterling household.
Young Cain Sterling was safe and for the most part stunned into lack of emotion by the events. Extended family members poured in by the van load to comfort young Cain. They told him, “you have to point your finger in court” and that that would “make the bad men go away forever.” So Cain did his part. He showed up at the trail and pointed at the two men who had ruined his life and that was supposed to be that. But when the men were sent away to a psychiatric clinic instead of a gas chamber due to “Temporary psychosis brought on by undue stress” something changed inside of Cain. Maybe he couldn’t understand why these men had done what they had done but he could learn to understand them. What makes them tick. Why his extended family members shuffled him around like an unwanted puppy. And why his mother moaned in pleasure even though they were not his father. He would understand all of this and more. He would devote his entire life to the study of the human mind and all its backdoors and loopholes and some day when he could face those two men again he could understand them.
And Destroy Them.
Cain spent the next fourteen years of his life in a whirlwind of doctorate studies and symposiums on the effects of induced psychosis on sane patients. He rose to such a position of prominence in the field of psychology that he gained tenure at North Western University and became the leading voice in the forefront of fringe psychology by the age of 28. But something was still missing something that had been missing since his fourteenth birthday. He never admitted it to anyone, most of all not himself but there had been a hole in his heart since he watched his mother stop breathing, moaning her last breath.
Then one day he found the puzzle piece in one of his students. Her name was Clementine Roshan.
It was only a few years into Cain’s career when he had met Clementine Roshan. He was considered a prodigy, looked upon by his fellow professors as a superior, objective thinker in the psychological field. His classes were designed to be very personal, 20 people at the most in his advance classes, and Clementine happened to be in a class of only ten.
It was her stare, at first, which caught his attention. Subtle and innocent at first, but after deep contemplation over its consistency and the sheer viciousness in her eyes, it began to disturb him. As the class went on, tasks becoming more complex and researches being personally analyzed by him, he saw the absolute genius of the concepts and hypotheses of Clementine’s studies… but the sinister intent they all entailed. She had studies on the commonality of children contemplating murder, about the amount of control men had over women in the household, the business hierarchy and what the lesser man would do to the man in power (if he could gain his position). Some were common thought, others just brutal… but the considerably negative results that Cain had noticed she preferred were all the more common ones. He often thought ‘how could any person openly try to find these terrible imperfections in human beings?’, but soon he grew an understanding of her… to the point of growing intimate with her in almost every way.
After the first midterm and every class after that, Clementine stayed with Cain as he packed up for the day; they discussed many horrible concepts and conclusions about the world, things Cain never would have thought in the aftermath of his parents’ murders. His fondness towards Clementine and her thought-provoking mind grew steadily unhealthy, wishing for both her body and soul in matrimony. He never said a word of it, however, during her time in college. By the time she left, his desperation for her broke him; he could not teach anymore without becoming anxious and easily angered, he could not sit still for more than a moment, could barely sleep, had no desire to eat… and his psyche could not handle life without her. She left the university without a word, leaving Cain for a second time without someone to place his affections in. Shortly thereafter he snapped and using the massive amount of money in his parent’s will, and set out across the country to try and find her. When random cults sprung up in a state, Cain immediately followed the source; but since they were created and killed so quickly in-between, Cain was never in time to see anything but the aftermath of the cult’s destructive actions. That was, of course, until he found The Sanctum and once again became reunited with Clementine Roshan.
What do you think of this situation?: It could be worse.
